If you’re reading this, you are using telecommunications. Whether you’re on your computer, mobile phone or tablet, telecommunications are making it possible!
Telecommunication, or telecom, is the exchange of information electronically, which can span long distances and covers different types of voice, video, and data transmission. Why do we need a special day to celebrate it? Let’s take a look.
The importance of digital communication
Telecommunication is a major part of everyone’s lives, especially in the digital age. The ability to interact and communicate through information technology is integral to how modern society functions. Telecommunication has become the cornerstone for families, organisations, communities and governments to easily connect and share information in today’s world.
What is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day?
Celebrated annually on May 17, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) can be traced back to the late Sixties. On this day in 1969, the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (formerly known as the International Telegraph Union) set out to establish World Information Society Day to mark the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
Over the years, the world has seen many technological advancements, and World Information Society Day has evolved into World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The mission of WTISD is to “help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.”
Spotlight on healthy aging
This year’s theme is “digital technologies for older persons and healthy aging.” According to the WTISD official website, the aging of the world population is one of the primary demographic trends of the 21st century, but as a society, we may still not easily recognise the benefits that this trend might provide.
Telecommunications and information communication technologies (ICTs) not only play a role in enabling people to age more healthfully, but also in building smarter elder-friendly cities, combatting age-based discrimination, ensuring financial inclusion of the elderly, and providing support to millions of their caregivers around the world.
The companies that help us communicate better
Our society could not have come this far without the technological advancements made by some of the world’s biggest companies.
Apple, for example, is a leading tech company that focuses on electronics, software and online services. Most of us own smartphones by now, but the company is also planning a future release of AR glasses that will take the data from your phone and make it visible on your eyewear.
Another company spearheading the telecom industry is Orange. The French company operates internationally, providing both mobile and fixed communication services, and is a leading force in the 5G revolution, making communication faster and easier in many parts of the world.
On TBanque, investors can gain exposure to Apple, Orange, and other major companies in the telecom field via the 5GRevolution Smart Portfolio. This ready-made portfolio, designed for long-term investing, bundles together companies leading the wireless communications revolution, whether they manufacture hardware, create infrastructure or provide telecom services.
